Abstract Structure

Sarah H. Nixon is an independent documentary filmmaker from Raleigh, North Carolina, whose stories center around the American South. She is currently in the production stage of her first feature-length film, The Benson Five, where she serves as co-director and producer. The project received a 2020 Emergency Research and Development Grant from the Southern Documentary Fund and MacArthur Foundation.

Nixon was awarded the Reel Digital Artist Award (2020) and mentorship with the PBS NC Producers Lab (2021). She also served as the 2022-2023 Artist-in-Residence with the Southern Studies Fellowship in Arts and Letters sponsored by the Chapman Cultural Center and Hub City Writers Project, made possible by the Watson-Brown Foundation. Her work includes Lifeline, a short film about artist Rosetta Nesbitt, and A Choice to Play, a short sports documentary about athlete activism, featuring figures like Billie Jean King, Muhammad Ali, and Colin Kaepernick. She is an active Brown Girls Doc Mafia (BGDM) member and participates in Filmshop's DocShop South program for 2025. 

 

Nixon received a bachelor's degree in Art and Visual Communications from NC Central University in Durham, North Carolina, and a master's degree in Documentary Film from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem.
